A landmark of Harvard Square is set to be redeveloped after a trio of buildings in the historic space were purchased last October for $85 million.
Equity One has filed plans for the redevelopment of the complex between Brattle, JFK and Mount Auburn streets in Harvard Square.
The plans have been filed with the Cambridge Historical Commission and include building a glass, two-story addition and a large rooftop pavilion. Two buildings included in the plans will be completely gutted, while the third will be rehabilitated.
The redevelopment will get rid of long-time Harvard Square residents such as the Curious George store and other small tenants.
The building has below-market leases that are set to expire soon and overwhelming demand for the prime location.
Redevelopment has the potential to transform the space and community, however some residents are worried about gentrification and iconic residents having to leave.
The new development will include retail and commercial space.
