Proposed plans for a new hotel in Chinatown will add to the already booming hotel industry within Greater Boston, according to Boston Business Journal.
Westbrook Partners has outlined the plans for the 17-story, 250 room hotel in the heart of Chinatown, taking place of what is currently an 8-story warehouse and office building.
The proposed building may be taller than some of the older surrounding buildings, but it is on a similar scale to other new developments proposed or beginning throughout the area, including 120 Kensington Street and 45 Stuart Street.
Within Westbrook’s plans for the new building they cited that there was a hotel occupancy rate of 81% in Boston and Cambridge and that the city saw more than 16 million visitors in 2014. The plans for the hotel anticipate a variety of visitors, including those on business, vacation, as well as those visiting nearby colleges.
The hotel site is close to the MBTA Chinatown Orange Line stop and near the Ritz-Carlton Boston Common and Hyatt Regency Boston.
This growth within the hotel industry has been steady for the last five years, due to more visitors to Boston despite the room supply staying the same. This slow addition of new hotels is expected to promote continued growth.
If plans are approved construction will begin in the fall of 2017.
